Summer 2011
Our group is continuing to thrive and we keep our enthusiasm by encouraging each other and trying new painting methods and subjects. At the moment we have paintings in progress which include a pen, ink and watercolour painting of Bourton on the Water, an acrylic painting of some deer in a woodland setting and an up to date oil painting of the royal wedding. It’s lovely to see all the different pictures.
The winner of our last little competition, where we have a black and white picture to produce in any way we like in any medium, was Nicky Moon. All the members vote for the painting they like best.
We have a trip planned for the end of May. We are going to the Watercolour Exhibition at Tate Britain. Lots of our members saw the exhibition featured in a programme with Sheila Hancock on BBC. It is the largest exhibition of watercolours they have had at the gallery and so we are all expecting to learn from it.
In July we are again going to Art in Action at Wheatley in Oxfordshire. This is a large arts and crafts exhibition where you can see the artists, potters, wood carvers and many more craftspeople working as well as selling. There is always good food and drink so if we get tired we sit and talk before carrying on. We meet for lunch and talk over what we have seen and bought and our only complaint is that a day is not long enough to do the show justice.
I thought it might be interesting to ask one of our members to contribute to this letter and here is what Richard Pope wrote:
Would you like to do some art but don’t feel confident about your skills? Haydon Artists’ Group welcomes people of all levels of ability, the common factor being interest in all sorts of art and helping others to enjoy it. People in the group use all sorts of media; watercolour, oils, collage, charcoal and many others. I’m no skilled artist, but have admired cartoons for many years and wanted to do my own. I joined the group in October 2009 and although nobody else in the group is drawing cartoons, I’ve had lots of helpful suggestions, constructive criticism and support.
Since joining the Haydon Artists, I’ve progressed from following the instructions in “how to draw cartoons” books to having a go at my own cartoons. I’m still not very good, but there is an improvement from my earlier efforts and, as all the teaching books tell you, you’ve got to keep practising if you’re going to improve. The main benefits of the evenings are the encouragement to spend time doing your own thing, and the sense of achievement and fun when you succeed.
Richard travels to us from Wootton Bassett and obviously finds our evenings enjoyable.
We are already planning our exhibition which will take place in October so do look out for the posters, we look forward to seeing you. We have had quite a few new members who first heard about the group at one of our exhibitions, so if you feel you would like to have a go at painting do come along. We meet every Tuesday morning at Haydon Wick council Offices and every Thursday evening at the North Swindon Library.
