The busiest time for our group is preparing for an exhibition and this year was no different as the group were asked to prepare all new paintings. The exhibition proved a great success and the comments from visitors were very encouraging. Lots of people said it was the best exhibition yet and this means a lot to the group, spurring us on to keep trying to improve and also to experiment with different paints and subjects.
For the first time we invited local schools to enter a competition as well as visiting the exhibition. Haydonleigh Primary School was the only school to take part. The prizes were for the first three paintings chosen to be framed and hung in the exhibition. All the entries were well done, the winners being chosen by the whole group.
Another first at the exhibition was to ask visitors to vote for the painting they liked most of all, and the winner was Malcolm Hosken who paints with pastels. The painting was a farmyard and was bought at the preview evening.
The Life drawing evening was again well attended and very enjoyable. The evening when Sue Gilmore Powell came to demonstrate acrylic painting was really informative and it’s surprising how much we learn by watching a professional artist at work. She used to be the resident artist at Westonbirt Arboretum and showed us how to paint the trees in autumn. This particular evening was organised by one of our members Karen Miller, whose family own Framework which is an Art and Craft Supplier on Cheney Manor. We had our Christmas celebrations just before Christmas when the Tuesday group went for lunch at the Fox and Hounds in Haydon Wick and the Thursday Group had dinner at the Blunsdon House Hotel. Both meals were well supported and we really enjoyed ourselves. We have had to say goodbye to four of our members during the past year: Anette Matthews, Ray Billings and Margaret Stagg sadly died, however Sugar moved on to pastures new.
Sugar Mitani, came to Swindon with her husband from Japan when he came to work at Honda, and has now returned home. We called her Sugar, at her suggestion, as this was the nearest pronunciation to her Japanese name.
We had a farewell party which gave us a chance to say goodbye and give Sugar some gifts to remind her of Swindon. She was sad to be leaving but is determined to come back for a holiday and already has e mailed us to say she is now in Tokyo and looking for a new home.

Whatever we do, we are certain to enjoy painting at our weekly meetings
and we hope that if anyone who reads this letter feels they would like
to come and have a go, they can be certain of a warm welcome.
Meetings are on Thursdays from 7pm to 9pm at North Swindon
Library and on Tuesdays from 10am to 12 noon at the Haydon Wick Council
Offices.
Beginners are always welcome and although these are not classes there
is usually some one who will help. The cost of belonging to the group
is £6 per month and as members we pay whether we go to every meeting
or not.
